Hatchimals are the biggest holiday trend for kids’ toys. Parents are lining up and spending big bucks to get it, but what exactly is a Hatchimal?

The toy starts off as an egg, but soon becomes a furry companion for your child.

According to the Hatchimals’ website, kids nurture their egg until it’s ready to hatch. When it’s ready, it will peck itself out of the egg.

This can take anywhere from 20 – 40 minutes.

After it hatches, kids help it grow by interacting with it. The Hatchimals life stages include ‘baby,’ ‘toddler,’ and ‘kid.’

As a toddler, kids can teach the Hatchimal to walk and talk. When the Hatchimal is fully grown, there are a variety of games that can be played with it.

Kids know how to care for their Hatchimal by deciphering the colors of their eyes. For example, if the Hatchimal’s eyes are red that means it is upset and needs a rub on the egg, or a pat on the head.

The toy is marketed for children age 6 and older, and starts at $59.99. But most are selling for much more because of demand.

Almost every store is sold out, and Hatchimals doesn’t expect to get more inventory until after the holidays.
