Charlie Roosevelt was known to his friends and family as Rambo.

Rambo was shot on his front porch Friday around 10 p.m. His fiancé, Rita Estrada tells 41 Action News that the man she loves was shot over a pair of shoes.

Estrada is still trying to make sense of what happened.

“Somebody lost their shoes and gave those ones to pay for the other ones and they were somebody else’s or something, I don’t know,” said Estrada.

Just a week ago, the couple was celebrating.

“He recently asked me to marry him,” said Estrada.

Friday night, that future was changed. The father of three was shot and killed on the porch of his home on Van Brunt Boulevard.

“I was coming to the front door and then I heard the shots and he turned the corner and he looked fine then he said ‘he shot me’ and fell on top of me,” said Estrada.

She remembers running inside and telling someone to call police, “It seemed like forever for them to get here,” said Estrada.

Rambo’s murder was the third homicide on Friday night alone. A few hours before, police had responded to a shooting on East 6th Street where Freddie Nevels was shot and Killed. Nevels’ family mourned his loss today, declining to talk about him on camera.

As these families try to find answers, Estrada is grateful to be surrounded by friends who knew Rambo and understand her loss.

“He was a wonderful father, he loved music, dancing, singing. He was always there for the people in the neighborhood,” said Estrada.
