KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Developer VanTrust broke ground on the new Brookside 51 complex near 51st and Oak back in 2015.

Now, almost 3 years later, construction continues.

The complex will include a Whole Foods grocery store, a 170-unit apartment structure, a student health center and a parking garage.

John Garrity lives in Brookside and enjoys watching the construction. He's surprised that the trailers are still on the site.

"I've been puzzled by it. They don't seem to be in any hurry at all," said Garrity.

According to VanTrust Real Estate's website the completion date was scheduled for September 2017. We reached out to the developer and Whole Foods for more information on an updated completion date. They did not give us that information.

Whole Foods did not release an updated timeline but Allison Phelps with Whole Foods tells 41 Action News it could be a couple of months before they have any information to share about the new store location.

Meanwhile, employees and workers in the area are looking forward to utilizing the new grocery store. Alicia Aguilara works next door at UMKC.

"If you need to pick up groceries before you go home, you can do it on your lunch break. I've been super excited for that to come," said Aguilara.
