KANSAS CITY, Mo. - They’ve used the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art as a canvas before, and Friday evening Quixotic and Bic Media will again show why their visual, innovative performances are requested at venues around the world.

Friday’s one-of-a-kind event called “Surfaces: 10 Years of Illumination” will mark the 10th anniversary of the Bloch Building, specifically honoring its architect Steven Holl. It will be held on the north side of the museum along 45th Street, which the city has shut down for the event.

Adam Johnson is the head of public programs at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. He said it was Kansas City-based Quixotic that approached the museum about doing another show on the grounds.

“They are doing performances around the world these days and they always like to give one high-profile event back to Kansas City,” Johnson told 41 Action News.

The two organizations agreed an artistic celebration of the Bloch Building anniversary was the perfect fit.

Friday evening’s show will feature choreography, acrobatics, musical composition and 3-D projection mapping similar to a show they put on for Union Station’s Centennial Celebration in 2014.

“We’ll be using two 20,000 lumen projectors that are used for large venues,” Quixotic founder Anthony Magliano said in a recent interview with 41 Action News.

“They will be shooting from roughly 80, 90 feet away. That gives us basically 200 feet of screen that we can shoot on,” Quixotic Technical Designer Will Funk said.

“There is going to be ground surface acrobatics and dancing and live music so it really is performance with a capital ‘P,’” Johnson said.

Anyone wishing to attend the evening event is urged to arrive early and bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food trucks will be up and running starting at 7:30 p.m.

Garage parking for museum members is free or $10 for non-members. Additional free parking is available nearby at the Kauffman Gardens.

The show will begin at dusk.
