Police were called to help a puppy locked in a hot car on Monday.

Merriam police said they received a call that the dog was locked in a vehicle at the Home Depot at 5700 Antioch Road.

After a while, officers were able to unlock the SUV and free the puppy from inside the car, which was not running.

Officers estimate the dog was locked inside the car for about 40 minutes.

The owner of the SUV was cited with a municipal charge for mistreatment of an animal. She’ll have to appear in court, though that court date has not yet been set.

Scott Poole, who works at Great Plains SPCA, shot video of police rescuing the puppy, which you can watch below. WARNING: Video contains strong language.
