Amy Mabion, 36, and her husband, 36-year-old Philip Mabion, were shot and killed inside their Olathe home Monday afternoon.

Police said Wednesday the investigation at this point indicates Philip Mabion shot and killed Amy Mabion with a handgun before taking his own life.

Friends and family of Amy Mabion did not want to be on camera.

Philip Mabion's family didn't want to be on camera either, but issued this statement to 41 Action News:

"We would like to thank everyone for their prayers and condolences. Our hearts are heavy with grief. Please keep us in your prayers, as we cope with this heartbreaking situation."

Philip Mabion's niece said she was very close to the couple and are mourning them both.

Neighbors, who didn't want to be on camera either, said they hardly slept the night it happened.

Court records show that Amy Mabion recently filed for divorce.

Safehome, a domestic violence agency in Johnson County, says when a violent act this drastic happens, there are usually events leading up to it.

"That's an area still being studied, there's a lot of research in that area, but we do know that power and control is the driving force," President of Safehome Janee Hanzlick said.

Without drawing conclusions about the Mabions, Hanzlick says people are surprised to hear of domestic violence in affluent areas like Johnson County - but it happens often.

"It can be even harder to leave when you're in that situation because you have so much to lose," Hanzlick explained.

In 2016, Safehome served more than 9,300 people with its services. They helped 1,000 people through the Johnson County courthouse, saw 1,300 people through their counseling program, and saw 350 people in their shelter.

Safehome offers a 24-hour hotline and a variety of services.
