It's another busy weekend in the metro, but when you're out and about you may be a prime target for thieves.

Police in Overland Park are gearing up to protect apartments and hotels in the 435 Corridor.

Hawthorne Apartments near 119th and Nall has been a hot spot for car burglaries.

Recently 13 people were hit there in one day. A purse and a laptop were stolen, along with other valuables.

But officers said the best thing you can do is protect yourself.

"You want to lock your doors. Most of these auto burglaries that are occurring in our city are with unlocked doors, so you want to lock your doors. You want to keep items of value out of plain view. Take it inside," warned John Lacey, OP police public information officer.

Lacey estimated over the past two weekends there have been about 20 victims in OP.

Most of these crimes are happening at hotels and apartment complexes, where thieves have easy access and cars are close together.

Other spots that were hit include the Extended Stay at 10750 Quivira Rd, and the Comfort Inn and Suites at 7200 W 107th St.

At the last break-in, police were able to gather some evidence like fingerprints, but so far, they do not have a suspect.
