BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. — On Monday, Cheri Crowley came to the home she and her husband recently sold.

"Saw my garage door wide open, knew something was wrong," she said.

Then her neighbor, Kristin Wood, told her she saw two men outside that afternoon.

Wood said, "I knew that they were moving. I thought they just had the house inspected so maybe they just had a couple things that they were redoing."

A quick walkthrough of the house and Cheri found out the burglars kicked in the back window of a car her husband, Mack, is restoring, took one of several matching blinds, punched a hole in the wall and vandalized their basement. The most unusual thing they took though, is installed carpet.

Cheri almost laughed, “I mean the carpet? Who steals carpet?"

Meanwhile, Mack is grateful the burglars were gone when his wife and two young daughters showed up. Cheri says if you’re selling a home her advice is to stage it because “I feel like it’s very inviting that if they feel it’s vacant they can get in and do whatever they want to.”

In all, there was about $3,000 worth of damage left behind. Tuesday morning, police recovered and returned some of the family’s property.

The Crowley family is grateful for the quick work by Blue Springs Police. Now, they’re hoping the Jackson County prosecutor’s office brings the people responsible to justice.
