Recycling in Lee's Summit was as easy as taking your recyclable materials to the nearest public school.

Starting this fall only students, their parents and staff can bring their recyclables to school.

The program used to be open to any Lee's Summit resident. But the district had to dramatically scale back the program because Deffenbaugh is charging the district.

"We will pay Deffenbaugh $14,000 to pick up our recyclables," said Ron Cox, Director of Distribution for Lee's Summit Public Schools.

It's a blow to residents who enjoyed the schools’ free recycle program. Earlier this year, the city closed both of its recycle centers because of high cost.

Now residents will have to pay their trash provider extra money to pick up their recyclables.

Even with the extra $14,000 cost to the district for students, staff and parents to recycle, the district decided paying the extra money is worth it to teach students to recycle.
