Leonard Rogers knows what it's like to be down and out.

"I was homeless," explained the Kansas City, Missouri, resident. "I know what it's like living out there on the streets."

That's why when he found Hostage, his 2-year-old pit bull, he took him in. That was a year ago. Around the same time he also found a 5-week-old kitten, who he named Baby Cat. Now they both live at his home with him and his girlfriend.

"It's companionship - someone to talk to when ain't nobody around," he said of Hostage. "It don't matter what kind of a day you're having, this guy here - even if he's having a bad day. It's all cool you know. It's all gravy."

But soon, Rogers realized he couldn't care for Hostage or Baby the way they deserved. The dog and cat needed vaccines and to be sterilized. Rogers, who is disabled, couldn't afford either.

"I didn't want to have any more animals around here than what he could afford to feed," said Monica, Rogers' girlfriend. "There were times he was feeding the dog and he wasn't eating because he was too worried about the dog."

That's when his Monica reached out to Spay & Neuter Kansas City.

"There are a lot of people out there who can't afford them yet they need companionship," said Monica. "They are lonely. They don't have someone else to depend on. All they have is that dog or that cat."

The organization neutered Hostage and spayed Baby Cat for free and still provide them with vaccinations and food.

"A lot of families, without Spay & Neuter Kansas City, would have to give up their pets," explained Spay & Neuter Kansas City Outreach Director Marlan Roberts.

And now Spay and Neuter Kansas City is working to remove the financial barrier of spaying and neutering pets like Hostage by offering 500 free surgeries for cats and dogs across the metro. It's all via a grant offered by PetSmart Charities.

"We all struggle," said Roberts. "We all have hardships. Don't be fast to judge situations you see in the public. Some families are doing the best they can with what they have and they need a little help to get over that hump."

Spay and Neuter KC said offering this service to people who otherwise can't afford it is a win for everyone because it lowers the number of animals that end up in shelters or being euthanized, and it keeps families - both two- and four-legged - together.

"These people are great," said Rogers. "They come to you. They'll work with you. I didn't have the money to get him [neutered]. I got what I could get up and they worked with me."

And they continue to with their pet food pantry which supplies people like Rogers with dog and cat food.

"Please reach out to us," said Roberts, who prides himself and his organization on being non-judgmental. "We understand people's struggle. We understand that everyone struggles. We want to help you get through that struggle. We are here. We have a pet food pantry program to help you get your pets fed, we can help you get your pet spayed or neutered at low or no cost."

Of the 500 dog and cat spays and neuters, only 100 surgeries are left. In addition to the sterilizations, Spay & Neuter Kansas City will also offer no-cost vaccinations for 100 pets and half-price vaccinations after the first 100.

They also offer low-cost spays, neuters, vaccinations and microchip services to the general public. It's all high-quality services but at a fraction of the cost of most veterinarians.

Spay & Neuter Kansas City offers:
  • Low or no cost sterilizations for dogs and cats
  • Low or no cost vaccinations for dogs and cats
  • Pet licensing and tagging
  • Pet micro chipping
  • Community cat trap, spay/neuter, return (TNR)
  • Food pantry for low income families

Because of these community services, Spay & Neuter Kansas City is always in need of volunteers, pet food donations and cash or gift card donations.
