Attention all dessert lovers. This is not a drill.

Canned whipped cream, like Reddi-wip, is in short supply after ConAgra's nitrous oxide plant in Florida exploded in early December.

Nitrous oxide is used to dispense cream from an aerosol can. Stores are currently stocked with cans of whipped topping, but that might change as Christmas inches closer.

A spokesperson for ConAgratold The Boston Globe, it should have a full supply of whipped cream up and running by February.

So what's the answer? Stock up early or make your own!

Creating whipped cream requires only four ingredients:

  • 1-quart Mason jar, chilled
  • ½ cup chilled heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Add all of the ingredients to the jar, close the lid and shake until thickened for 3 to 5 minutes.

And now you have delicious homemade whipped cream!
