How to improve the air quality in your home during the winter

Typically, springtime is prime allergy season. However, people can get just as sick and groggy in the wintertime if their house has poor air quality.

Here are some tips from Bob Hamilton Plumbing to help reduce indoor allergens and toxins:

  • Open the windows for a little bit - helps with air circulation.
  • Keep fans running, especially in your furnace. Not only does it help with air circulation, it helps warm the house evenly.
  • Avoid using conventional household cleaners with lots of chemicals.
  • Avoid winter painting projects - those fumes can get to you! If you do paint inside in the winter, make sure you purchase a low/no odor paint.
  • Use your vacuum hose to clean your ducts out. It won't be very far down, but you can get rid of a lot of dust and debris where the air flow leads to your living space.
  • Use air purifiers.
  • Change your air filters regularly.

Companies can also install a UV light system into your ductwork. They kill 99.9 percent of all bacteria, dust, mildew, mold, pet dander, smoke, and odors.

You can also have your ductwork cleaned professionally. They can scope inside to see if there is any standing water, mold or mildew.
