5th Lansing Correctional Facility inmate dies after contracting COVID-19

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A fifth inmate at the Lansing Correctional Facility who tested positive for the novel coronavirus has died.

The Kansas Department of Corrections said in a news release that the resident – an 81-year-old man with underlying medical conditions – died Wednesday after being transported to an area hospital five days prior.

The man was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder and aggravated robbery, the release stated.

Earlier this year, Lansing Correctional Facility was the site of one of the largest COVID-19 outbreaks in Kansas.

To date, the facility has reported 968 COVID-19 cases, two staff member deaths and five inmate deaths.
