KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas Citians are joining forces to provide free meals to unemployed service industry workers.

Miel Castagna Herrera, of Café Corazón in Midtown, created a GoFundMe for the project, which had raised nearly $2,000 by Wednesday night. Open Belly Podcast, Café Corazón and The Tamale Kitchen are working together to make those meals possible.

Organizers said the generosity of Kansas City is overwhelming.

"It's so amazing too that Kansas City comes together like this,” Herrera said. “It's not just for the Super Bowl or when the Royals win, it's for big events. We come together and we help each other out and that's super cool."

Organizers hope to bring meals to workers in Kansas City, North Kansas City and Kansas City, Kansas. If those events go well, and donations continue to be made, organizers said they will continue to make meals.

A $10 donation provides a meal for one person. The meals include two tamales from the Tamale Kitchen and Café con Leche from Café Corazón.
