KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Cass County, Missouri, said it will extend its local stay-at-home order through May 3, putting the county in line with the state but not with Kansas City, Missouri, and Jackson County, which have both extended their local stay-at-home orders through May 15.

At the same time, Clay County — which had previously extended its stay-at-home order through May 15 — said Wednesday that the local order will now expire on May 3.

Both counties cited the latest modeling projections for the peak of COVID-19 cases for their amended stay-at-home orders.

However, Clay County residents who live in a city with orders that extend beyond May 3 “must follow the order of that particular city,” according to the Clay County Health Department.

In a statement provided to 41 Action News, Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas said that less than one week ago, health directors throughout the bi-state region advised that stay-at-home orders be in effect until May 15.

“I’m not sure what has changed as a metro,” Lucas said. “Like our peers, we continue to evaluate our recommendations daily based on public health advice. I badly want our region to get back to work — but the tradeoff cannot be someone losing their parent, partner, child or friend to COVID-19. We will continue to listen to our public health professionals — not the political winds — as we work to protect our community’s health, which is essential to our City’s long-term economic vitality.”

Clay County Public Health stated on its website that the county’s number of new cases remains “consistently low.”

“The modeling tool used by Clay County Public Health Center was updated over the past weekend and the projected peak for Missouri was lowered to a maximum projected peak of April 17,” according to the Clay County Health Department.
