KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas Department of Corrections said Tuesday that an inmate of the Ellsworth Correctional Facility died after testing positive for COVID-19.

The inmate died on Monday and is the sixth inmate in Kansas to die with a COVID-19 diagnosis, according to the Department of Corrections.

KDOC said the inmate who died tested positive for the virus back on Sept. 26 and was moved to the Lansing Correctional Facility COVID-19 Management Unit, and three days later to the hospital.

The family requested the name of the deceased not be released. KDC did say he was 60 years old and had underlying medical concerns.

The man was serving a life sentence for sex crime convictions out of Wyandotte County, according to KDOC.

He is the first inmate at Ellsworth Correctional Facility to die due to complications from the virus.
