KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A non-military employee is the first confirmed case of COVID-19 at Whiteman Air Force Base.

The case was confirmed Saturday, according to a Whiteman Air Force Base news release.

Commanders with the 509th Bomb Wing are working to keep those on the base and in the surrounding community safe.

"This first confirmed case is a stark reminder that we must take this seriously,'' said Colonel Jeffrey Schreiner, 509th Bomb Wing Commander, in the news release. "Let me be clear to Team Whiteman - if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or believe you have been exposed, call our public health hotline at 660-687-1545."

The base last week canceled its Wings Over Whiteman Air and Space Show that was scheduled for June 13 and 14.

The base commanders were concerned about the spread of the coronavirus.
