OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — On Thursday, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced the state is ready to move into Phase 2 of the state's vaccine roll out process.

About a million more Kansans are now eligible to receive the shot.

A list of the Phase 2 guidelines can be found on Kelly's website.

This has some food workers excited.

At Best Regards Bakery and Cafe, owner Robert Duensing loves his customers but knows they can't be inside his shop too long during this pandemic.

"There’s always that little bit of doubt and fear in the back of your mind, are they sick are they contagious, are they spreading germs, what is my exposure," Duensing said.

Now Duensing and his employees can get vaccinated in this new phase, giving them that peace of mind while continuing to operate a people-friendly business.

"We’re excited about the prospect of finally getting the vaccine," Duensing said.

Several members of the Roeland Park Police Department received their shot on Thursday including Sgt. John DeMoss.

41 Action News spoke with DeMoss hours before about why it's important to get the shot.

"Once I get it, I’m going to feel more confident that I can contact people and I won’t be spreading the virus," DeMoss said.

As a first responder DeMoss said he's possibly exposed to the virus as they deal with members of the public everyday. He said getting this vaccine to protect this smaller force of just 15 officers is vital.

"If a couple of us call in sick or a couple of us get exposed and spread that to others, it really creates an affect of manpower, it hurts us not having the right people in the department or enough people to work the streets," DeMoss said.

This vaccine is a turning point for those in this next phase, as it's one more step to defeating this virus.

"We feel like there’s hope," Duensing said.
