KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hy-Vee will begin limiting meat purchases at all locations beginning Wednesday.

The decision comes as COVID-19 causes a shortage of workers at plants.

That combined with the high demand for fresh meat during the pandemic means customers will now only be allowed four packages of meat at checkout.

The four can be a combination of fresh beef, ground beef, pork and chicken.

Kroger and Costco have already placed similar restrictions on meat purchases in order parts of the country.

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, a Price Chopper spokesperson said they are not imposing across-the-board limits on meat purchases, but encouraged shoppers to "shop responsibly and only purchase what they need."
