KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jackson County, Missouri, officials are starting to plan for the county to reopen in mid-May.

At a county legislature meeting on Monday, it was announced that the county’s health department is organizing a group “to develop a regional plan so that Jackson, Wyandotte, and Johnson Counties and the City of Kansas City will use the same standards to reopen.”

Plans will “likely” limit crowd sizes at establishments and require employees to wear personal protective equipment, according to meeting minutes.

Some county employees will return to work May 11 to prepare for “public facing operations” to reopen by May 18, according to meeting minutes. The minutes also stated that “associates will likely be required to wear PPE when working with the public and moving around the courthouse.”

“The goal is to reopen responsibly to avoid a shutdown in the future,” the minutes stated.

County Administrator Troy Schulte said, according to the minutes, that private businesses will be allowed to reopen under “certain guidelines related to social distancing and supplying employees with PPE.”

The committee also is expected to discuss the return of organized sports, such as little league baseball. A plan also is expected for “contact tracing and increased testing.”

The county also received funds from the federal CARES Act on April 22. The funding, $122.7 million, cannot be used to “offset lost revenues,” according to the meeting minutes.
