KANSAS CITY, Mo. — More than 250 Johnson County, Kansas, employees have been furloughed, the county said Thursday.

As of Wednesday, 264 employees had been temporarily laid off from their jobs with the county.

Officials said "the furloughs are meant to align staffing with the current programs and services," and "helping to maintain income stability for employees who did not have sufficient work due to COVID-19."

The county said many of those furloughed worked in Johnson County libraries in roles that could not be done remotely.

Some staff in the Johnson County Park and Recreation District were furloughed for similar reasons.

Furloughed workers will remain employed with the county so they can keep the benefits until they are changed back to active status.
