Johnson County man in his 70s dies from COVID-19

JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — Johnson County has had its first death due to COVID-19.

On Saturday, the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment reported that a man in his 70s died from the coronavirus. He was hospitalized and had no history of travel. JCDHE said in a news release that the man had underlying health conditions.

"This is a tragic loss of life and we share our heartfelt condolences with the family," said Dr. Sanmi Areola with JCDHE said in the release. "While the vast majority of cases of COVID-19 are believed to be mild, the virus can cause a very serious infection that can lead to death, especially in people over age 60 and those with underlying medical conditions."

The county currently has 26 positive cases of coronavirus, including the death.
