KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Garmin Kansas City Marathon scheduled for Oct. 17, was canceled Monday morning due to COVID-19 safety concerns.

"Out of concern for the safety of race participants, partners, staff and volunteers, organizers of the Garmin Kansas City Marathon have made the difficult decision to cancel the race scheduled for October 17, 2020," an event spokesperson said.

Instead, participants now have three options to convert their registration to.

One option for people who registered is participating in the "Million Mile Challenge," where people are encouraged to complete the marathon on their time and location before Oct. 17.

The second option is donating their registration fee to Garmin.

"100% of the proceeds generated from the Garmin Kansas City Marathon help fund our mission of making a better Kansas City through sports by attracting major events such as the 2023 NFL Draft, the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Your support is critical to helping sustain our efforts during these uncertain times," an event spokesperson said.

The third option is to defer their tickets until next year's marathon event.

Last year more than 10,000 people participated in the marathon.
