KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A U.S. military veteran who was admitted Wednesday to the Kansas City VA Medical Center has become the hospital’s first patient to die from COVID-19 complications.

The KC VA Medical Center announced Monday that “a Veteran patient in their 60’s died April 5.”

“Our team at the Kansas City VA Medical Center sends our deepest condolences to the Veteran’s family, friends, and loved ones,” Kansas City VA Medical Center Director David Isaacks said in a statement. “We know this loss will be felt by our veteran patients as well as our staff. We urge everyone to continue being vigilant and supportive of each other as we all work together to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect each other, especially those most vulnerable.”

The patient said he had been exposed to COVID-19 and became symptomatic about 10 days before being admitted to the hospital last week.

The veteran’s family was able to interact via video conference and FaceTime while he was hospitalized, according to the Kansas City VA Medical Center.
