KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas Department of Environment and Health will be getting some much-needed help to handle the workload brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foundation granted the department funds for additional epidemiology staff, Secretary Dr. Lee Norman said Wednesday.

The money will be used to hire an industrial hygienist, which Norman described as a “combination of somebody that is an expert in infection control, safety and engineering.”

The hygienist will also help the department consult with high-risk facilities such as nursing homes about air handling, plumbing and physical structures indoors.

KDHE will also be able to onboard an informatics specialist from the CDC Foundation, who will help with data aggregation and analysis.
