Live blog: Missouri, Kansas top 2,000 combined COVID-19 deaths

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, continues to spread across the world, and in Missouri and Kansas.

Updates on the spread of the virus and how it is affecting the metro can be found below for Aug. 25.

3:46 p.m. | One resident at the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex tested positive for COVID-19, the Kansas Department of Corrections announced on Tuesday.

The department says the resident is a 15-year-old male but could not provide anymore information to protect his identity.

The resident has been quarantined in a one-person room. -D.M

3:41 p.m. | There have now been more than 2,000 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in Kansas and Missouri combined, including another 12 announced in the seven-county Kansas City metropolitan area.

The KCMO Health Department, which switched last week to reporting coronavirus statistics only on Mondays through its dashboard, announced nine new deaths, while Jackson County reported two deaths and Johnson County announced one additional death.

Missouri added a total of 29 new deaths throughout the state in reporting Tuesday by local and state health departments.

2:40 p.m. | Four RideKC bus operators tested positive for COVID-19 after driving various routes between Aug. 7-18. —AW

2:06 p.m. | The Kansas City Chiefs will be the only team in the AFC West to allow fans in the stadium for home games.

The Los Angeles Chargers were the last of the other three teams in the AFC West to announce no fans on Tuesday. -DM

1:40 p.m. | The city of Blue Springs says it will resume late charges for past due utility bills on Oct. 1.

Disconnections and late charges were suspended when the Jackson County stay-at-home order went into effect “to allow residents to adjust to the changing circumstances,” the city said in a news release Tuesday.

12:25 p.m. | Amtrak passengers in Kansas will see reduced service starting in October as part of the rail service's nationwide cutback in routes in response to the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Associated Press. Amtrak plans to cut service on nearly all of its long-distance trains to three times a week.

7:15 a.m. | A temporary St. Louis County morgue that opened in April to help care for bodies of coronavirus victims is shutting down.

County officials announced the closure Monday. St. Louis County has been hit harder than any other area of Missouri in terms of COVID-19 confirmed cases and death. -KB
