KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There are no “concrete” plans to cancel the Missouri State Fair amid coronavirus concerns, according to Gov. Mike Parson.

Parson said during a press conference on Wednesdsay that, as of now, there will be a “Plan A” and “Plan B,” or possibly a shortened version of what is typically an 11-day event during the summer in Sedalia.

He said they have to “really evaluate” on June 1 after seeing what happens in May and that he has been in contact with Fair Director Mark Wolfe.

“But again, I don't think there's anything in concrete until we get a little closer to the first of June, see where we're headed in the state,” Parson said.

He also addressed how the State Fair decision would affect county fairs.

“I don't want to be misleading – again, we're under social guidance for this 30 days – but outside is probably one of the better places to be,” Parson said. "So as long as you do the social distancing, we keep the common sense in mind, I think all those things are fair.”

However, he said it is challenging when attending a fair.

“Everybody's going to have to adapt to something a little differently than what we did before this all started,” Parson said. “But again, that's why I say the first couple of weeks of May and this month will be critical to see really how things open up for June and July.”

The Missouri State Fair Board of Directors is expected to meet on Thursday.
