KANSAS CITY, Kan. — It’s the first weekend for many outdoor venues to open in Kansas as some COVID-19 restrictions, including those on crowd sizes, have lifted.
Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas, held its first race on Friday as fans from across the country flocked to the track.
"Itʼs a beautiful shaped track. Itʼs got a lot of speed to it," said LaVerne Frost, a fan from Glendale, Arizona.
The general manager of the speedway, Pete Howey, told 41 Action News about 2,500 fans came out.
"I wish I could say it is sold out, in a real sense, but we gave ourselves a limit — 30 percent, give or take of the grandstands," Howey said.
The speedway is following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for social distancing. All fans will need to provide their own masks, and speedway officials do not want them to gather in groups and travel to different areas in the venue.
"Anyone that has that concern of being on top of each other, you know elbow-to-elbow in the bleachers, thatʼs not going to happen," Howey said.
Howey said he believes next week will be the last time restrictions will be placed on venues like the speedway and the rest of the season can be normal capacity.
