KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It's the day many sports fans have been waiting for: Opening Day.

Friday, the Kansas City Royals opened their season against the Cleveland Indians.

Royals fans gathered at the Power and Light District for a watch party — pandemic style.

A spokesperson for Power and Light told 41 Action News that typically 5,000 people gather for parties and concerts. Friday, the capacity limit was near 500.

Around 100 tables were set up in the Kansas City LIVE block for guests to sit at and properly social distance. Everyone in attendance was required to follow Kansas City, Missouri, guidelines, which require customers to wear a mask except when they are seated at their table, or eating and drinking.

The Power and Light District said despite the smaller crowd, they were excited to welcome people back and show live sports on their big screen.

“Even though there has been preseason games going on, to actually see an official game, you could tell the excitement was there and people were into it so, I think we’ll have a great crowd and a lot of good energy and that baseball ballpark feel," said Jason Bradley, the director of entertainment and production for the Power and Light District.
