INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Normally, in mid-April, Campus RV Park in Independence, Missouri, would be kicking off its tourism season.

Because of stay-at-home orders, the RV park is seeing tourists cancel trips, but it is making up for it in other ways.

Leslie Sherman, who runs the park’s office, said more campers are lining up for long-term stays.

She pointed out many people are in town to work an essential job or here for medical reasons and need a place to stay since lodging options like Hope Lodge have closed.

People at the park feel like they are more socially distant in their RVs than at a hotel. Each RV has its own bathroom and water supply.

“If you’re in a hotel, you’re potentially sharing the air and elevators and types of spaces with other people. Whereas, here, everyone has their own parking, their own space. We are not doing in-person transactions. So everyone’s already quarantined, if that makes sense,” Sherman pointed out.

Campus RV Park is accepting long-term stays later into the season and is still hopeful it sees a tourism season this summer.
