KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Having scientists around is helping the Johnson County Sheriff's Department devise ways to clean and reuse COVID-19 protective gear.

Forensic scientists at the department's Criminalistics Labratory worked out a way to sanitize and reuse some of the protective gear worn by deputies in the field, according to a department news release.

The forensic scientists figured out a way to use evidence drying cabinets and the use of Ultraviolet lights to sanitize several N95 protective masks in an hour or less.

Those masks can be reused by first responders, the release states.

Three reutlized cabinets were put in fire stations and Med-Act buildings.

The department posted a video of the cleaning process on their Facebook page.
