SHAWNEE, Kan. — Memorial Day weekend traditions look a bit different this year.

The crowds around the grills and tables are smaller.

But there were crowds of people enjoying a sunny Saturday at Shawnee Mission Park.

“We’ve all been kind of staying home, so we’re not too worried about the coronavirus and I mean we’re not associating ourselves with any other people out here," said Eddy Lopez.

The beach and playgrounds at Shawnee Mission Park remain closed.

Many said the park wasn't as busy as usual with social distancing restrictions.

“A couple of weekends ago this was packed full of kayaks and paddle boards and everything," said Heather Loeffler.

Saturday, finding a spot out on the water was a breeze.

“There’s really no problem out there. If it was packed person to person like on the 4th of July that would be different, but today there’s plenty of space, plenty of water, it’s just hard right here where you load in and load out," said Becca Cooper.

After being cooped up in the house due to stay-at-home orders, most people told 41 Action News they were just happy to be out.

“It’s great to be out of the house, me and my family have had cabin fever," said Mark Zydlo.

Driving into the park, Ruthie Ortega said seeing the amount of people enjoying the outdoors was exciting.

“When I drove up it’s like, it’s nice, people are getting out, so I felt really good about it," said Ortega.
