School districts are only weeks away from the start of a new semester and families may once again be tasked with balancing work life and school life.

But this time around Karen Selnick of the Huntington Learning Center of Williamsville wants to help frustrated families with some tips to help strike that perfect balance.

1. Keep a positive mindset.

"We do have to keep in mind that our children listen to us, and they watch us very carefully, so the more positive we are about our experience, the more can-do attitude we take, that can be adopted by our children."

2. Promote confidence.

"Skills are only part of the answer to learning. Confidence in learning influencing motivation for learning and motivation influences learning new skills, being able to take risks."

3. Dedicate time to learning.

Selnick said she understands that many families do not always have the most time to help their children with school work, but if they can manage to set aside at least an hour a day for it, she said the children will benefit.

"Establishing a time of maybe an hour in the morning, maybe an hour in the afternoon may be at least a first step."

4. Seek help when needed.

Selnick said if you and your child are struggling to get through the school work, contact your child's teacher for advice.

"Your child's classroom teacher knows your child. They know what your child responds best to, and they will have the best suggestions for you."
