KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Twelve rooms have been constructed in an ambulance bay near the Emergency Department at the University of Kansas Hospital, allowing doctors to evaluate patients for COVID-19 while limiting possible exposure to the rest of the facility.
The evaluation rooms are separate from the entrance and other public areas.
Patients brought to the University of Kansas Hospital with respiratory symptoms will be received by staff in protective clothing and directed to the converted ambulance bay.
Any patient experiencing breathing problems that require emergency care should call 911, but people experiencing breathing issues that don’t require emergency treatment should call their primary care physician.
Patients who believe they might have COVID-19 should not show up at the hospital or doctor’s office without calling ahead first.
Calling ahead “will help ensure the patient receives the best, quickest, safest care,” according to KU Hospital.
