LIBERTY, Mo. – The Clay County Sheriff’s office is warning residents about a string of thefts from residential mailboxes.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said they were looking into reports of stolen checks from people’s mailboxes, a form of check fraud.

A sheriff’s department spokesman said the reports they’ve received so far cover the last few weeks.

At least three cases have been reported so far.

The spokesman advises residents can take several precautions to limit their exposure to the thieves:

  • Don’t leave mail in a mailbox overnight or drop it off for pick up on a Sunday or holiday when the post office is closed.
  • Pick up your mail promptly after delivery. If you're expecting checks, credit cards, or other items ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your mail.
  • If you don't receive a check or other valuable mail you're expecting, contact the issuing person/ agency immediately.

The department has more tips on the Facebook post.
