KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Missouri, man was charged this week in the 2016 shooting death of 29-year-old Brandon Johnson.

Terrance A. Jones, 35, was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and unlawful use of a weapon.

The shooting took place on Sept. 2, 2016, at East 28th Street and Mersington Avenue in KCMO.

Johnson was found dead in the street and witnesses told police that Jones was with the victim that night, according to court documents.

The Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said that in a 2018 interview with police, Jones admitted to being with Johnson the day of the murder but said he did not hurt him.

In a 2020 interview, a witness told police that Jones said he killed Johnson for calling a family member a "rat," according to court documents.

There was an assault involving a gun the same day Johnson died, and the witness said he was involved in both shootings. Police determined the same gun was used in the assault and in the fatal shooting.

Jones was taken into custody in Columbia and the prosecutor's office requested a $300,000 bond.
