KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City, Kansas, police on Tuesday identified the suspect shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting on Friday after allegedly pointing a gun at officers.

The man was identified as Jose Mendez, 37, of Kansas City, Missouri.

Police said that Mendez assaulted a Kansas City, Missouri, police officer near 39th Street and Indiana Avenue, prompting a chase that ended on the other side of the state line.

Mendez drove the wrong way on Interstate 70 before abandoning his vehicle on Interstate 670 and fleeing on foot, police said.

KCK police caught up with Mendez near South Coy Street and Gilmore Avenue. Mendez pointed a gun at officers and was shot and killed, according to police.

The incident is being investigated jointly by the KCK and Topeka police departments.
