KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Lee's Summit teenager is charged in Clay County court with killing a man as he watched "Star Wars" last week inside a Northland house.

Davonte Cornelius, 18, is accused of first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.

Kansas City, Missouri, police responded to a shooting shortly before 10 p.m. on May 8 at a house in the 5300 block of Northeast 57th Street, where they found 22-year-old Tyler Genson of KCMO dead from a gunshot wound.

Genson was sitting in a chair watching a movie inside the house when bullets tore through a back door and into a chair where he was sitting, according to a KCPD probable cause statement.

The gunfire — police found more than a dozen 40-caliber shell casings in the backyard — also hit a second man in an arm, but his wound was not life-threatening.

Cornelius, who had been in an ongoing dispute with people who lived in the house, admitted to shooting into the house, but he told police he didn't think anyone was home, according to a court document.

Bond was set at $1 million and no court date has been set.
