KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man who intentionally struck a 15-year-old Somali boy outside a Kansas City, Missouri, mosque in 2014 was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years in prison.

Ahmed Aden, 40, entered an Alford plea in December 2019 on charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

He initially was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Abdisamad Sheikh-Hussein, a sophomore at Staley High School.

Aden admitted to police that he used his car to ram into the teen, though he said Sheikh-Hussein was not his intended target. Sheikh-Hussein was struck after he had finished leading prayer and was about to leave the mosque with his friends, prosecutors said.

A Jackson County judge sentenced Aden to 30 years on the murder conviction and 10 years on the armed criminal action charge. The sentences were set to run consecutively.
