A family is devastated and grieving after their 16-year-old was shot and killed.
Monday afternoon family and friends planted a vase with flowers to remember 16-year-old Hakim Ali. Jada, one of his four sisters watched on.
Police said someone shot the Washington High School junior not far from his home near Stewart Avenue and Tremont.
Ali’s mother heard the gunfire
“He just started calling her name so she came outside and that's when she found him,” Telesha Bennett, a family friend said.
Ali passed away at the hospital at 1:45 a.m.
Kids who knew the 16-year-old said he played basketball and was in ROTC. They said he was a good kid, he loved technology and often fixed phones.
Grief counselors were called to Washington High School to tell his classmates what happened.
“It was really heartbreaking because I see this person everyday in class and to know I'll never see him again it's like crazy,” Deja Edwards, a Washington High School senior said.
Ali is the latest victim in what’s now a deadly year for the KC metro.
“Regardless of everything they've heard he was a good young man,” Bennett said.
At 5:30 p.m. Monday balloons will be released in his memory.
A spokesperson for the KCK school district said they plan to have grief counselors at Washington High School once again Tuesday.
Police have not released any information on suspects.
"Hopefully somebody saw/heard something, even if it's just a rumor. Something to get us going on the right path. We'll have detectives back out here later this afternoon going door to door again. Hopefully get us some information that way," said Thomas Tomasic, KCK police spokesperson.
If you know anything about this fatal shooting call KCK Police or the KC Crimestoppers Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
