Two men have been charged with aggravated assault on a Lenexa law enforcement officer after shots were fired at the officer Wednesday night.

Police said on Jan. 6, 2016 at 9:58 p.m., a Lenexa police officer was conducting an undercover surveillance on an ongoing criminal investigation in the city of Lenexa. While conducting surveillance, a suspect vehicle left the location and the officer followed in his unmarked vehicle.

The officer called out for assistance from police-marked vehicles in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle continued into Shawnee. While the officer was coordinating with marked vehicles, shots were fired from the suspect vehicle, according to police. They shot multiple rounds at the officer as they were driving. The officer was able to keep the suspect vehicle in sight until other officers arrived. Several police officers responded to assist and the suspect vehicle was disabled with a tire deflation device in the city of Shawnee.

Two adult males were taken into custody. The suspects, 19-year-old Ruben Rodriguez and 21-year-old Samir Arredondoaragon, were transported to the Shawnee Police Department for interviews and processing and were booked into the Johnson County Jail. The Shawnee Police Department will handle this investigation and it is ongoing, according to Lenexa police.

Both suspects will appear in court Thursday afternoon.

The officer was not injured.
