Upgrades keeping criminals away from Budd Park

Neighbors surrounding Budd Park say new lights and cameras are doing their job to keep criminals away.

"Our goal is kinda, to take back the park and make it more family friendly," said Drew Fulton, a soccer coach.

Last summer, several people were killed in the area located in northeast Kansas City.

The spike in violence prompted KCPD and the neighborhood association to join forces, adding surveillance cameras and brighter lights.

"I know for me, when I drive by in the evenings, I enjoy seeing the lights because at least you can see, you can see if something comes out of the shadows, you can see that," said Daniel Esteban, who has lived in the area for 17 years.

The safer space allows kids to get together and play every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
