KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The family of Terrell Sutherlin held each other tight Friday night as they gathered across the street from where the 23-year-old passed away.

"It's so sad that we have lost our young man — a father — his little baby is here and he saying 'da-da.' He sees his daddy's picture on everybody's shirt. He don't know what's going on," Rosilyn Temple, founder of KC Mothers-in-Charge said.

This vigil served as a celebration of the life for the Raytown High School graduate.

Sutherlin's aunt, Theresa Mason, told 41 Action News her nephew was sitting in a car with two other men at an apartment complex near 59th and Ridgeway last Saturday.

Mason said one of the men pulled out a gun and it went off.

"He was supposedly cleaning a gun but everybody knows you don't clean a gun in no car," Mason said.

Mason had talked to her nephew hours before his death.

"He wanted to be a truck driver we had a meeting to meet with a guy on Monday in order to open up a tow truck company," Mason said.

Those dreams of being an entrepreneur cut short in this most recent act of violence in Kansas City.

"Whether it's on purpose whether it's an accident it still needs to stop it definitely has to stop," Mason said.

Police said although they've questioned a person in connection with the shooting, charges haven't been filed as Friday evening.
