KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Blue Springs woman has been charged with felony DWI in a deadly crash June 24 on eastbound Interstate 70 west of Adams Dairy Parkway.

According to a probable cause statement from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Desiree C. Smith, 37, was allegedly impaired when she drove the wrong way on I-70 and killed a woman in a head-on crash.

Multiple witnesses told law enforcement that Smith passed them in the center lane, driving westbound in the eastbound lanes in a silver 2011 Cadillac CTS.

One witness observed the fatal crash in her rearview mirror after Smith’s car smashed into a 2003 Ford Taurus driven by Heather Blackman, 44, who was pronounced dead at the scene despite wearing her seatbelt.

Smith’s legs were pinned, so emergency responders had to extricate her from her vehicle.

According to court documents, a partially consumed bottle of liquor was in the passenger seat of the Cadillac and a trooper at the hospital observed alcohol on Smith’s breath. A blood test was administered to determine her blood-alcohol concentration.

Smith was charged with DWI-Death of Another Not A Passenger, a Class B felony punishable by five to 15 years in prison. She is jailed on a $100,000 bond.
