KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The three-month summer break turns into a fast-paced job search for bus companies across the nation. Finding qualified bus drivers is an issue impacting school districts in most states.

Local bus company DS Bus Lines is holding a job fair to help find drivers for the 2018-2019 school year.

DS Bus Lines is responsible for picking up students in the Shawnee Mission School District, along with the Belton School district.

The company said they have enough drivers to cover their current routes but need more drivers to help with special trips and to help cover routes if a bus driver calls in sick.

The company wants to hire between 15 and 20 drivers. The company is hosting a job fair at its main location, 5519 Merriam Drive, on July 16. It will be from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

If you want to apply you must:

  • Be 21 years old or older
  • Have had a valid driver’s license for at least three years
  • No major traffic violations in the past 10 years.

According to the National Association for Pupil Transportation, the top reasons people are not applying for bus driver positions include:

  • Not enough benefits
  • Not enough pay
  • Trouble obtaining a Commercial’s Driver’s License
