Giant tree falls on Kansas City woman's home

Posted

A Kansas City woman's neighbors may have saved the day for her and her daughter, just before a giant tree crashed down on their home near 94th and Bristol on Tuesday morning.

The woman, who did not want to share her name,  told 41 Action News some time before 6 a.m. she heard a noise that sounded like a garbage truck. That's when she heard her neighbors pounding on the door, yelling for them to get out.

They ran out just before the second part of the tree fell on the home and no one was hurt. The tree pierced the roof and shot through the garage, kitchen and living room.

Garnett Whitmire, who goes by the nickname 'Handyman,' lives nearby and does yard work on the side.

He said the tree was hollow and it may have come down because of termites. He said there are preventative measures to keep your trees healthy.

"Get some professional tree arborists out here to determine, because these are some big trees out here. Like I said, over a period of time, the trees are going to come down," Whitmire said.

The woman living in the home said she is renting.

She said her landlord called his insurance company.
