KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person suffered minor injuries in an apartment fire Tuesday afternoon in Independence.

Crews responded shortly before 2 p.m. to the 4400 block of South Liberty Avenue.

Independence Fire Department Battalion Chief David Sellars said one person jumped from a second-story unit that was roughly 8 to 10 feet off the ground and suffered an injured ankle.

Of the 24 units in the building, three had major damage and 12 total had water damage, according to Sellars.

Residents of two units are being assisted by the Red Cross.

The majority of the fire was knocked down in 20-25 minutes.

An investigation into what caused the blaze is under way.
