UPDATE, Aug. 14 | The victim in the crash was identified as Simon Wilmont of Olathe.
Overland Park police said the crash occurred because Wilmont was speeding in the inside lane and quickly tried to cross lanes to the U.S. 69 exit ramp. The vehicle hit the barrier dividing the ramp and the main lanes of traffic. He was ejected.
The vehicle also spun and struck a second vehicle, but that driver only sustained minor injuries.
ORIGINAL STORY, Aug. 13 | One person died Thursday afternoon in a crash on the interstate in Overland Park.
The wreck happened shortly before 2 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 435 near the Quivira Road exit.
The wreck appears to have happened in a tunnel underneath an entrance ramp and has closed the ramp from I-435 to U.S. 69/College Boulevard as Overland Park police investigate the crash.
