Olathe 6th-grader helps domestic violence survivors

An Olathe girl is not letting her age stop her from making a difference in her community.

Olivia Cupp-Korp is a 6th-grader at Frontier Trail Middle School in Olathe. While most 12 year olds were enjoying their spring break, she helped stock the children's room and the health and beauty closet at SAFEHOME. 

SAFEHOME is a domestic violence shelter in Johnson County.

Janee' Hanzlick is the CEO of SAFEHOME. She said their facility serves men, women and children and is often at capacity.

"We have a 60-bed capacity, and so we serve a lot of people. And I always say anything you need at your house, we need the same things, just a lot more of it," said Hanzlick.

Olivia started collecting items at her parents' jobs as part of a science project. She chose charity for the focus of her project. And once she learned about SAFHOME's commitment to women and children who've survived domestic violence, she was hooked.

"I could never image having to go through something like that, and when I heard about what all they did for these people, I was like I want to help them. I want to be part of that. I want to help these people," said Olivia.

The recipients of Olivia's donations will find comfort in her selfless decision to serve others. She plans to hold another donation drive for her classmates.
