KCPD and Kansas City Public Schools are investigating an alleged sexual assault in a school stairwell.
A male teenage student at African-Centered College Preparatory Academy is in custody, accused of forcing himself on another student during lunch.
The female accuser says the encounter on the fifth-floor stairwell was initially consensual. The boy asked to talk to her in the stairwell and they then started kissing. She says he started groping her and that's when she said no. But according to the female student, the boy continued until he raped her.
The alleged victim finished the school day and then told a tutor after, who alerted authorities.
The alleged suspect was still at school when police arrived. He was questioned at the school before being placed into custody and transferred to the juvenile detention center.
Kansas City police are reviewing security footage to find evidence while KCPS conducts its own separate investigation.
In a statement, KCPS said, "We will do everything to ensure that our students can attend school in a safe, secure and nurturing environment."
